EXXASENS is an instrumental post-rock band from Barcelona, blending cosmic atmospheres with intense, emotional melodies. Founded in 2007 as a solo project, the band has grown into an internationally recognized act, performing at festivals like Primavera Sound, Dunk!Festival and Resurrection Fest. With a focus on cinematic storytelling through sound, EXXASENS continues to push the boundaries of instrumental music.

Introduce us to the band! What are your names and what do you do in the band?

Where do you call home?

We are EXXASENS, an instrumental post-rock band. The core of the band is led by Jordi Ruiz, who handles guitar and the main songwriting. Alongside him, we have an incredibly talented group of musicians who bring the compositions to life during live shows. We’re based in Barcelona, Spain, which we proudly call home.

  •  How long have you been together as a band and how did you find each other?

EXXASENS started in 2007 as a solo project in Jordi’s home studio, but it grew into a full band in 2011 to take the music live. Over the years, we’ve connected through Barcelona’s vibrant music scene and a shared passion for atmospheric soundscapes.

  •  Do you have a special songwriting recipe you follow?

There’s no strict formula, but each song starts with a visual or emotional concept. Jordi creates layers of melodies and rhythms, often inspired by space exploration and human emotions. Once the foundation is laid, the band collaborates to refine the dynamics and energy.

  •  How would members of your family describe your music to someone that hasn’t heard it?

They’d probably call it “cinematic” or “music that takes you on a journey.” Some of them might also say, “It’s like the soundtrack of a sci-fi movie!”

  •  What do you have on your(Spotify) playlists you would be embarrassed for others to see?

Nothing to be embarrassed about! We have everything from Hans Zimmer to ‘80s pop classics—it’s all about appreciating great music, regardless of the genre.

  •  Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Yes, we always gather to take a deep breath together, set our energy as a group, and remind ourselves to enjoy the moment. We also make sure all our gear is triple-checked—it’s essential for smooth transitions during our instrumental set.

  •  Who have you met that has left you starstruck?

Meeting other instrumental bands like Caspian and Toundra has been inspiring. They’ve set the bar high in the post-rock scene, and their kindness and passion left a lasting impression.

  •  What do you consider your greatest achievement as far as a band?

Touring internationally and playing festivals like Dunk!Festival and AMFest have been huge milestones for us. Also, having our albums released on vinyl by labels like Dunk!Records and Aloud Music is a dream come true.

  •  What key elements do you believe makes up a successful song?

A successful song has a balance of emotion, storytelling, and dynamics. It needs to create an immersive experience that resonates with the listener. For us, it’s about painting a picture without words.

  1.  When writing, how do you know when it is finally done?

A song is done when it feels natural, as if no additional layer could improve it. It’s an intuitive process—sometimes you just know it’s complete when the mood it conveys is exactly what you envisioned.

  1.  What song of yours are you most proud of?

It’s hard to choose, but “Infinitum” holds a special place in our hearts. It perfectly captures the spirit of EXXASENS: powerful, emotional, and cosmic.

  1.  Is it possible to be on the road and not eat junk food? How do you keep it leveled out?

It’s tricky, but we try to balance things out by grabbing fresh fruits and salads whenever we can. Staying hydrated and having healthy snacks on hand helps too.

  1.  Are you able to write while on the road or do you need a calm familiar space like home?

Writing usually happens at home, where we can take our time to build layers and explore ideas fully. However, touring provides plenty of inspiration, which often translates into new ideas when we’re back.

  1.  What’s the most embarrassing thing to happen on stage or on tour?

One time during a show, the fog machine completely took over the stage—it looked cool, but we couldn’t see our pedals or even each other for a few minutes! The audience loved it, though.

  1.  What can BleachBANGS do to help you in any way?

Supporting us by spreading the word about our music, sharing our tour dates, and including us in playlists would be amazing. Every bit of exposure helps us reach new fans.

  1.  How can everyone keep up with everything you have going on? Where can they get albums/merch?

You can follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Spotify to stay updated on our latest news and tour dates. Our albums and merch are available through our official website and labels like Dunk!Records and Aloud Music.
